KCCWG meeting held on 24th February

Introduction
The Kenya Climate Change Working Group convened its first general meeting in 2010 at the All Africa Conference of Churches, Westlands on the 24th February, 2010.
The main purpose was to brainstorm on the activities for 2010.
It was expected that 70 participants will attend the meeting, but a total of 150 people attended the general meeting, from all over the country.
A general overview about the Climate Change Bill was shared and, towards the Bill, the collaboration between the government and KCCWG was applauded and emphasized.
Preliminaries
After a word of prayer was conducted by one of the members of KCCWG, an introduction of all the participants followed thereafter. Mr. Joseph Ngondi read the previous minutes which were confirmed by Mr. Martin Theuri and Seconded by Susy Wandera.
As Matters arising:

  • Mr. Ali Marapash highlighted on the south rift climate change hearing in Loitoktok. He said that only 17 people had confirmed participation to the hearing which was to be held on the 5th March 2010. He further stated that the only problem that arises in access to the hearing will be majorly on the transport issues and therefore a big car would be mandatory to ease transport for those who wanted to attend. He confirmed that the progress will be later sent through mail.
  • The Kenya Forest Working Group had send apologies as they had to attend a function in Mau. Mr Ngondi reported that they had a meeting with the secretariat of KFWG during the previous month and a close collaboration had been agreed on. Mr. Msafiri said that collaboration and networking is indeed required especially at the grass root level. Most of the KWFT contribution was mainly on REDD. Mr. Msafiri said that they will meet at the end of the month and requested the members to bring up issues of forest in the region for follow up. He further went on to say that those who were interested in joining the Kenya Forest Working Group were welcome.
  • Mr. Mutie confirmed that KWFG is hosted by the East African Wildlife Society. He said that KWFG got its support from SIDA to continue with Phase two to monitor MDGs 1 and 8 and how the government is implementing that to come up with a global report. He said that anyone interested in viewing the report should contact him.

Introduction of the thematic working groups
The convener of KCCWG Mr. John Kioli said that the network was divided into the thematic
areas and further welcomed the conveners of each thematic group to say a little about their
thematic group.
1. Dr. Alfred Omenya: Urbanization, Infrastructure and Housing Thematic group
Dr. Omenya introduced his members. He said that their research on urbanization, infrastructure and housing that would contribute to the global warming bill started very
late. He reported that during the validation workshop which was held on 18th February at Panari Hotel, the thematic group presented their findings that were to contribute to the global warming bill. He stated further that the group was open and other members of KCCWG could join if working in Urbanization, Infrastructure and housing sectors. He reported that there was an upcoming KCCWG energy efficiency project in buildings, supported by global fund, UNEP among others, but was still on its planning stages.
2. Judy Ndichu: Water Thematic group
She introduced the members of the Water thematic group, and stated that they had completed their research and forwarded it for validation and later incorporation into
the global warming bill. A project Operation Mwolyo Out being implemented by one of the members of the water thematic group had constructed 200 dams in Yatta and the group planned to replicate it in dry areas of Kenya. She said that KEWASNET was researching on water reforms and the sensitivity of water issues on climate change and adaptation. She reminded participants that on 22nd March it would be world water day celebration and they will be at Kaloleni area in Coast Province. On the 14th March there would be another celebration on Kenyan community mobilization Network with the theme “water for quality life” i.e Maji safi maisha bora. She said that during the tree planting in Mau it was represented by 22 representatives from slums. She also said that ANEW was interested in KCCWG.
