Emuhaya Climate Hearing

The Kenya Climate Change working has initiated a phase of sustained awareness and sensitization at the grassroots via a membership in Kenya.
On the Saturday of 23rd October, 2010 KCCWG had a very successful climate hearing, and possible solutions brainstorming session with more that 150 chosen local leaders of Emuhaya constituency.
Hon. Dr Wilbur Ottichilo, the area member of parliament, and one of the key pillars of climate change advocacy gave the key note address and accompanied the KCCWG delegation, and the local leaders all day long, in sharing climate change related problems and brainstorming on the possible solutions to the problems locally.

Mr John Kioli, the Convener of KCCWG encouraged the local people to continuously work to solve the ever increasing climate change challenges in the area of water, energy, afforestation, explore tourism projects and others.

Dr Geoffrey Manyara, the convener of the Tourism thematic group of KCCWG, who facilitated the discussions, and made a presentation on the impacts of climate change on local tourism, as well as the tourism opportunities, encouraged the members to explore opportunities towards tourism development in the area.

The district Forest Officer and the NEMA District Officer in Emuhaya discussed the local situation with a view to linking all actors in solving the emerging climate change and environmental problems in Emuhaya.

Looking at the leadership in Emuhaya, with alot of development information and action experiences documented, and close collaboration of leaders with local people in coming up with local solutions, one would encourage other districts to take similar approaches for sustainable climate change solutions. This is because to solve any local problems, a participatory approach involving all actors and the people is required.

(The information from the constituency will be linked to our website for further reference. Some research by one student from Ireland will also be shared, just in case it provides some insight for our planning).
